Air beds look like a normal innerspring mattress, but use chambers filled with air instead of coils, and are covered by a foam layer on top. They should never be confused with blow-up mattresses that are filled with air. Patients with different kinds of injuries that must be in bed for a long time have been using them for years. They can be adjusted to support different areas of the body, depending on the injury. This tells that air mattresses can make you feel like sleeping on a cloud, if you choose the right one. Airbeds are known for being effective in reducing and even preventing pain, especially back pain. Loss of support with time, is usually not a problem with this type compared to most other bed types (you definitely won’t get sagging). Made of more chambers and parts, airbeds provide better conformability and allows changing firmness to be comfortable for different sleeping positions or body types. Air mattresses models, however, that don’t have an extra comfort layer are often too firm for most side sleepers and make more problems.
Depending on what you’ll use it for, you can choose different types of air mattresses. Assuming you need it for everyday use (not as a guest or outdoor bed) and to help you with best mattress for low back pain, you have few types to choose from:
1. Air Mattresses combined with frames and rails
Modern air mattresses can be bought with accompanying, usually metal, frames. They are easily portable, and in the meantime the frames prevent the mattress from being on the ground, keeping you protected from the cold. Beside by frames, air mattresses can also come accompanied by rails (they are usually connected to the mattress and are made of foam or any other soft material). It’s better to avoid air mattresses with a thin foam rail and look for an air mattresses with a well built foam rail. This kinds of beds improve your sleeping experience, as it supports the whole body (you won’t be slipping or falling out of the bed during your sleep).
2. Mattresses with air pumps – beds with internal
Built – in pumps are the only way to go if you are planning on using an air mattress everyday. Manual pumps can work and usually are very quiet, but if you want to save time it is best to buy an external electric pump or buy a mattress with a pump that is included (noise with a pump is unavoidable, but you can find a pump that is not so loud and get used to it).
3. Adjustable air beds
Beside internal pumps, some air mattresses are made and connected with remote controls. Having a remote control allows you to change the amount of air and the level of the mattress while you are using it. This is great for getting just the right amount of air you prefer, without getting out of bed and putting on the pump (or even worse – start pumping manually in the middle of the night).
One of the best things about this kind is that the firmness of each side of the bed can be changed. If you like it different than your partner (if one of you has back problems, one side can be made firmer than the other to provide bigger support), these beds can be adjusted for that. Bad sides include that people sometimes don’t make their air bed firm enough and wake up with back aches and more problems. Less sophisticated (and cheaper) air mattresses also pop up on one side when you sit on the other, so you need more expensive air bed with multiple chambers in it to prevent this from happening.
